Es evidente que Adán, con toda su ciencia, nunca hubiera sido capaz de demostrar que el curso de la naturaleza ha de continuar siendo uniformemente el mismo, y que el futuro ha de ser conforme al pasado. De lo que es posible nunca puede demostrarse que sea falso; y es posible que el curso de la naturaleza pueda cambiar, puesto que podemos concebir un tal cambio. Más aún, iré más lejos y afirmaré que Adán tampoco podría probar mediante argumento probable alguno, que el futuro haya de ser conforme al pasado. Todos los argumentos probables están montados sobre la suposición de que existe esta conformidad entre el futuro y el pasado, y, por tanto, nunca la pueden probar. Esta conformidad es una cuestión de hecho, y si ha de ser probada, nunca admitirá prueba alguna que no parta de la experiencia. Pero nuestra experiencia en el pasado no puede ser prueba de nada para el futuro, sino bajo la suposición de que hay una semejanza entre ellos. Es éste, por lo tanto, un punto que no puede admitir prueba en absoluto, y que damos por sentado sin prueba alguna.

It is evident that Adam, with all his science, would never have been able to demonstrate that the course of nature must continue uniformly the same, and that the future must be conformable to the past. What is possible can never be demonstrated to be false; and it is possible the course of nature may change, since we can conceive such a change. Nay, I will go farther, and assert that he could not so much as prove by any probable arguments that the future must be conformable to the past. All probable arguments are built on the supposition that there is this conformity betwixt the future and the past, and therefore can never prove it. This conformity is a matter of fact, and, if it must be proved, will admit of no proof but from experience. But our experience in the past can be a proof of nothing for the future, but upon a supposition that there is a resemblance betwixt them. This, therefore, is a point which can admit of no proof at all, and which we take for granted without any proof.

Adán nunca podría demostrar que la naturaleza fuera a funcionar siempre del mismo modo que lo ha hecho en el pasado porque es posible concebir que lo haga de otra manera. La uniformidad de la naturaleza es una cuestión de hecho, y solo puede estar basada en la experiencia, la cual nos dice cómo fue el pasado, pero nunca cómo será el futuro.
